On June 25, 2019, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed HB 1438 into law, separating hemp from marijuana legally and legalizing the sale of specific hemp products. The newly passed legislation, which Senator Heather Steans supported, made it legal for adults to possess and use marijuana. It also enlarged the system for medical cannabis licensing, including forgiveness for marijuana-related offenses, and allowed qualified patients to grow marijuana at home.
