Initially, the state of Missouri legalized CBD oil-based products only. This includes industrial-hemp-driven products with a THC content of up to 0.3% and no more.
The state also opened two ‘cannabidiol oil care centers’ to start cultivation and extraction of CBD on an industrial level back in 2015.
Soon, the overwhelming public pressure resulted in a more progressive and concreted medical marijuana program getting adopted by the state of Missouri.
According to this plan, patients who are diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition are able to apply for a Missouri Medical Marijuana Card.
But does this amendment allow registered medical marijuana patients to get a firearms license? Unfortunately, no.
When it comes to regulations revolving around gun possession and ownership in Missouri, the state strictly follows federal legislation which automatically disqualifies a medical marijuana user from owning a gun as marijuana is still recognized as a Schedule I drug on the federal level. This means no protection for medical marijuana patients when it comes to gun possession.
Taking My Gun To a Dispensary in Missouri: Is It a Good Idea?
- In most cases, the state of Missouri doesn’t require you to actually have a Concealed Carry Permit (CCP) as long as you do qualify to own and carry a gun in Missouri as per federal law. But, the state did declare some places completely off-limits when it comes to carrying a firearm. These places include,
- Any higher-education institution or elementary/secondary-school facility, without the permission of the school's governing body (University of Missouri System employees are exempt from this and can carry a firearm but are not allowed to shoot)
- Any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited as per federal/state law
- Any building used as a child-care facility
- Within 25 feet of any polling place on an election day
- Any adult or juvenile detention/correctional institution/prison/jail
- Any courthouse solely occupied by the circuit/appellate/supreme court (this includes any courtrooms, administrative offices, libraries, or other rooms of any such court)
- Any private property whose owner has declared a 'no-firearms' policy for the area Any building or portion of a building owned/leased/controlled by counties or municipalities with signs posted at the entrance
- Any meeting of the governing body of a local government unit
- Any meeting of the General Assembly or a committee
- A law enforcement agency or a similar facility
- Any establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises (owner's consent is necessary)
- Any area of an airport to which access is controlled by the inspection department
- Any riverboat gambling operation (publicly accessible)
- Any gated area of an amusement park
- Any sports arena or stadium with a seating capacity of 5,000 or more
- Any hospital (publicly accessible)
- Any church or other place of religious worship without the consent of the minister or person representing the religious organization (vehicles in the parking lot are exempted)
- Any public passenger bus
- Any metro train
As a dispensary is not included in the list of protected areas, you can legally carry a gun there as per the legal guidelines set by the state.
Consuming CBD Products and Owning a Gun in Missouri
The state of Missouri does allow hemp-drive CBD products to be consumed by its adult residents as long as the products are derived from industrial hemp and have less than or up to 0.3% THC.
This means that it is perfectly safe for you to consume CBD products and own a licensed firearm within the state.

The steps taken by the state of Missouri in favor of medical marijuana legalization are quite prominent. But, the state still needs to work on protecting the fundamental rights of its registered patients such as the right to own a firearm if it wants to be actually considered a progressive and liberal state.
