Qualifying Conditions for a Medical Marijuana Card in Massachusetts (2026)
Massachusetts’ Medical Use of Marijuana Program, overseen by the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), allows residents with certain debilitating medical conditions to register as medical patients and purchase cannabis from licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MTCs). Patients need a physician certification and an active registration, but there is no state registration fee for patients or caregivers.
Qualifying Medical Conditions
Massachusetts uses a core list of debilitating conditions and also lets certifying clinicians approve other serious conditions they deem appropriate. Common qualifying conditions include:
- Cancer
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- Hepatitis C
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Crohn’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Other debilitating conditions causing severe chronic pain, weakness, cachexia or wasting syndrome, intractable nausea, or symptoms that substantially limit major life activities
Clinicians may also certify patients for conditions such as chronic pain, PTSD, severe anxiety, insomnia, or other serious disorders when they determine that medical cannabis is clinically appropriate.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify as a medical marijuana patient in Massachusetts, you must:
- Be a resident of Massachusetts (with valid proof of residency)
- Have a debilitating medical condition as determined by a certifying healthcare provider registered with the program
- Obtain a written certification from a Massachusetts‑licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or other approved clinician
- Be at least 18 years old, or meet additional requirements as a minor patient with caregiver support
Application Process
- Get Certified: Schedule a consultation with a registered Massachusetts medical cannabis clinician, who will review your history and, if appropriate, issue an electronic certification.
- Register Online: Use the certification number to create an account in the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Online System, upload a photo, confirm your information, and complete your patient registration.
- Receive Approval: Once approved, you can print a temporary registration and later receive a physical medical marijuana registration card, allowing purchases at licensed MTCs (up to 10 ounces per 60‑day period, unless otherwise specified by your clinician).
Caregivers and Minors
Adult patients who need help, and all minor patients, can designate up to two personal caregivers to assist with obtaining and administering medical cannabis. Caregivers must register, pass required checks, and hold their own registration cards linked to the patient.
