Is Weed Legal in Barbados? Marijuana Laws 2025

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In Barbados both medical and recreational use of cannabis is illegal. It is against the law to sell, cultivate, or possess cannabis and anyone caught doing so can face consequences. Although medical marijuana legislation was passed in 2019, the program is still in its early stages.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act in Barbados, possession of cannabis can result in a prison sentence of five years and a fine of up to 250,000 dollars (approximately USD 125,000). Cultivation, sale, and trafficking carry severe penalties including life imprisonment along with significant fines.

Medical cannabis regulations in Barbados

In 2019 Barbados introduced the Medical Cannabis Industry Bill which allows for the use of cannabis under regulations. Licensed medical professionals are permitted to prescribe cannabis for conditions such as multiple sclerosis and chronic pain.

However, due to the early stages of the medical marijuana market, farmers, processors, and dispensaries must undergo a licensing process. The government aims to regulate this sector to ensure safety and prevent misuse.

Laws regarding possession of marijuana

As per the legislation, possessing up to 14 grams of cannabis or ganja can lead to a fine of $200.You are required to pay the fine within 30 days. Generally, criminal charges are not imposed by the law. Barbados has strict laws regarding marijuana.

Moreover, if law enforcement officers discover any individual under 18 years old in possession, they will refer them for treatment to the National Council on Drug Abuse.

Laws concerning the cultivation of marijuana

In Barbados, cultivation is illegal. However, it is allowed if you possess a license to produce marijuana for personal use or religious purposes like those practiced by Rastafarians.

Conclusion

Both recreational and medical use of marijuana are prohibited in Barbados and anyone caught engaging in these activities will face consequences.

Although medical marijuana is prohibited, the market is still evolving. It is important to be aware of the regulations and potential repercussions, before using or possessing cannabis in Barbados.
