Medical Cannabis for Osteoporosis Treatment
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the strength and density of your bones. If left undiagnosed it can lead to complications.

Although there is little research on the impact of marijuana on osteoporosis some evidence suggests that cannabis may have benefits in treating this condition. In this article, we will explore the role of marijuana in addressing osteoporosis.

Understanding Osteoporosis

One concerning aspect of osteoporosis is its nature as patients often remain unaware of their condition until they experience bone fractures. However, there are early-stage symptoms that individuals may experience:

  • Reduction in height
  • Changes in your posture
  • Back pain
  • Low bone density
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle spasms

The symptoms can vary from person to person therefore it is recommended to consult with your doctor if you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms.

Medical Marijuana and Osteoporosis

A study from Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research discovered the use of two different cannabis-based medicines. In this research, the experiment was conducted on 83 patients over 7 days. The blood test for bone resorption was conducted for these patients and the blood test was repeated after the administration of cannabis products.

This study has two groups of patients, one with no cannabis use and the other those who received an oil containing 120-480 mg CBD and a 5.4-21.6 mg THC ratio. Alternatively, these patients received cannabis gel containing 6 mg CBD and 5-20 mg THC.

Ultimately, it was observed that bone resorption increased significantly in patients with cannabis administration.

Further research is still needed to know about the correct amount of dosage for treating osteoporosis but this research shows that cannabis can help with rebuilding the bones which is the most common problem faced by patients with osteoporosis.

Cannabis’s Effect on Bone Health:

The human body can break down old bones and form new bones continuously. But for osteoporosis patients, the breaking down of bones as compared to the new bone formation occurs at a faster pace. Osteoporosis can cause impairment, prolonged immobilization, and poor bone density which can impact the person’s quality of life. If you are an osteoporosis patient and looking for a suitable treatment option for the disease then we have good news for you. Now, you can treat your osteoporosis symptoms with the help of cannabis. Certain research shows the benefits of cannabis in treating osteoporosis.

Cannabis contains over 120 cannabinoids and among them, THC and CBD play a crucial role in treating osteoporosis. These cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system that contains neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are responsible for regulating pain which is frequently experienced by osteoporosis patients.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and Bone Health:

Certain researchers found that cannabinoid receptors including CB1 and CB2 can be expressed in bone cells which could affect born turnover. The study further examined that CB2 is responsible for bone remodeling at homeostasis which protects against age-related bone loss and low bone density.

Marijuana’s Potential Benefits for Osteoporosis:

Although there is no concrete evidence that marijuana can treat osteoporosis, it can help in improving the condition by reducing the symptoms. The above-discussed studies indicate that cannabis has some properties that can help with bone reformation.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease and it can only be noticeable when the bones break down which causes chronic pain. Patients who use medical marijuana claim that cannabis helps them deal with chronic pain and decreases other related symptoms.

Osteoporosis can cause inflammation. As we know cannabinoids like CBD have anti-inflammatory properties which can help in managing symptoms like back pain and other spasms.

Conclusion

There is no concrete evidence on whether medical marijuana can treat osteoporosis or not but it can help in reducing the symptoms. The studies that were discussed in this article show that cannabinoids like CBD can help prevent bone loss which is a good sign for cannabis users. However, it is always recommended to take advice from your doctor whether you are eligible for medical marijuana or not.
